A new step for minimally invasive surgery in Nyon
GHOL’s (Groupement Hospitalier de l’Ouest Lémanique) 2025 Annual Report looks back at the introduction of the Hugo™ robot-assisted surgery system at Nyon Hospital.
This development is part of the hospital’s broader move toward minimally invasive approaches, involving both the surgical and operating-room teams.
Robot-assisted surgery does not mean that a robot performs the procedure autonomously. The system remains entirely controlled by the surgeon, who retains full responsibility for the surgical gesture and strategy.
Hugo™: technological assistance in service of the surgical gesture
The Hugo™ system is an assistance platform for minimally invasive surgery.
It combines three-dimensional visualization with articulated instruments controlled by the surgeon from a console.
The value of this type of technology lies notably in the possibilities it offers for performing certain minimally invasive procedures with tailored visualization and ergonomics.
Its use is not, however, an indication in itself. The choice between conventional, laparoscopic or robot-assisted surgery depends on the procedure being considered, the patient’s clinical situation and the team’s expertise.
A technology integrated across several specialties
GHOL’s Annual Report highlights the cross-disciplinary nature of the project. The platform can be used across different surgical disciplines, notably in urology, digestive surgery, bariatric surgery and gynecology-obstetrics.
This multidisciplinary dimension allows experience with robot-assisted surgery to be shared across the institution.
It also involves substantial collective work: training, operating-room organization, protocols, anesthesia and coordination between the various professionals involved.
A national first in bariatric surgery
GHOL’s 2025 Annual Report reports that a first Roux-en-Y gastric bypass assisted by the Hugo™ system was performed on September 26, 2025 at Nyon Hospital by Dr. Pierre Fournier.
GHOL presents this procedure as a national first in robot-assisted bariatric surgery with this platform.
This step is part of the progressive development of robot-assisted surgery within the institution.
The surgeon remains at the center of the procedure
The term “robotic surgery” can give the impression that a machine operates autonomously. This is not the case.
The system reproduces the movements commanded by the surgeon and serves as a tool to assist the surgical gesture. The surgical indication, the choice of technique, the conduct of the procedure and the decisions made during the operation all remain the responsibility of the medical team.
The technology thus complements surgical expertise; it does not replace it.
An innovation embedded in a hospital-wide project
The arrival of robot-assisted surgery in Nyon is not simply a matter of acquiring equipment. Its integration requires structured organization, professional training and close collaboration between the various teams involved.
The project is part of the broader evolution of surgical practices and minimally invasive surgery at GHOL.
GHOL’s 2025 Annual Report thus places this development within the wider context of Nyon Hospital’s growth and activities.
