Obesity Surgery: Why a Multidisciplinary Approach Matters
Bariatric surgery is not just a single operation. When indicated, it is part of a pathway combining different medical and paramedical skills before the operation and throughout follow-up.

Far more than a surgical procedure
Obesity is a complex, multifactorial disease. When bariatric surgery is being considered, the indication is therefore not reduced to the BMI figure alone: it requires a medical evaluation adapted to each patient’s situation.
Several professionals around the patient
At the Centre de l’Obésité et du Métabolisme de la Côte, care combines surgery, endocrinology, nutrition and dietetics, along with psychological support. Physical activity follow-up may also be offered, and other specialties become involved when a patient’s situation requires it.
This team-based organization allows medical, nutritional and psychological perspectives to be combined before proposing a course of treatment.
Why an evaluation before the operation?
Before considering an intervention, the evaluation covers, among other things, the patient’s medical history, metabolic situation, eating habits, and understanding of the procedure and the follow-up it involves.
This preparation is not an identical checklist for every patient: it is adjusted to each individual situation.
Choosing the procedure based on the situation
Several techniques exist, notably sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass. The choice depends on the patient’s individual situation, not on one technique being generally superior to the others.
Follow-up continues after the operation
Medical, nutritional and biological follow-up continues after the intervention, as does attention to the patient’s metabolic progress and to physical activity adapted according to the team’s recommendations.
This follow-up is not intended to guarantee a specific weight outcome: it aims to support the patient over the long term.
A long-term commitment
Evaluation, individualized intervention, collaboration between professionals and long-term follow-up: obesity surgery is part of a continuous pathway, of which the operation is only one step.
